Liz of Oscar Cat Designs explains how to crochet a lovely flower brooch. It would have been in time for Mother’s Day if we’d got our act together, so make one for yourself instead. Or lazy bints can buy one ready-made from here.
You need:
- Number 4 crochet hook
- Two colours, double knit
- A suitable button
- Tapestry needle
- Sewing needle
- Sewing thread
- Brooch pin
How to make centre flower:
Step one: Chain 4; slip stitch to form a ring
Step two: Chain 1; single crochet into centre of the ring (do this as many times as it takes to get back to the beginning- about 8/9). Slip stitch into first chain.
Step three: Chain 4; slip stitch into next stitch onto the round to create the first flower petal. Repeat this all the way around the ring (about 7/8 petals). Slip stitch when you get back the first petal and tie off the wool (cut).
How to make the second flower:
Use your second colour. Same instructions as above (except that step two creates a bigger centre). Step two: Chain 2; d ouble crochet into the centre of the ring (all the way around, until you get back to the beginning again). Slip stitch into the first chain on the round.
How to join the flowers together:
Use your tapestry needle. Sew in the ends (two on each flower) MAKE SURE YOU LEAVE THE CENTRE THREAD ON THE SMALLEST FLOWER. Use this centre thread to sew the two flowers neatly together. Then stitch the end in.
Add the button.
Sew the brooch pin on the back.
Et voila!
