Mess it up

mess smallIt’s every girl’s right to fuel her wiley ways by means of a gigantic and delicious brunch (a term I believe is used for us lazy lasses who’d rather stay in bed ’til noon on a Sunday) and what better place to go than Hackney’s very own Mess.

Lugubrious “Crackney” I hear you cry! Don’t let the E8 postcode fool you my friend-sneakily squeezed between a (not on the corner) corner shop and pet store, Mess is situated at 38 Amhurst Road and delivers the kind of breakfast/brunch/lunch package many of us can only dream of. From the Open Sandwich to Full English you are sure to find something that takes your fancy. If not? Well simply Create Your Own!

With a queue that often extends out the door and clientele varying from vintage European ladies enjoying a sly coffee to the uber-cool fun cats, complete with fuchsia jeans and smudged make up (and that’s just the boys) this really is the place to be. One regular even informs me that she travels from North London to cuddle up to some good Mess grub, stating: “The food is amazing- it’s the best breakfast in London . . . and the banana milkshakes are a must!!”

The service is somewhat languid due to the constant flow of demanding patrons; however this is more a charm than a letdown. You can’t help but empathise with the all to0 in-demand staff who always offer up a smile and never glower, even when ardent regulars pick apart the menu and pilfer the free newspapers.

With a friendly and chaotic ambience, great food, and delightful staff, I defy you not leave swooning . . . and perhaps a few lbs heavier.
